My employer said it was safe that we would have had to eaten a whole bowl of them for us to suffer any effects!!! Now, 2 years after the last exposure, there are a lot of us who are very sick with everything from blood disorders to mimic asthma, fibromyalgia. gee I wonder if 328 months in a row would be considered at least a whole bowl of them??? No windows were open, kids and staff were present in rooms, no MSDS sheets were posted, no warnings, and when tried to file a work comp claim,, was told to go try to file another claim and go pray, that nothing was wrong with me and go back to work!! Now I have abnormal EEG'S, MRI'S, Spinal Tap (suggesting MS or fibromyalgia), or a muscle disorder!! Uh isn't fibromyalgia a pain from an unknown origin?? well i do know the origin!!! As a parent, one looks to why it happened. Although we have yet to prove a chemical exposure connection, we have a strong suspicion that our son's immune system was "turned on" by backyard exposure to chemicals leaching up from an undergroud private dump of many years ago. Neighbors on the street remember "drums" of pharmaceuticals and chemicals being buried in what was our backyard many years ago. While living at this residence, the septic overflowed each spring. At least once a month there is a serious incident involving this substance, as people try to get ammonia to make methamphetamines and leave a valve open or just the general escaping through leaky vlaves, etc. There is more than a 10% rate of various cancers in our town; I currently have esophageal ulcers from the most recent incident about three weeks ago. After about a week I started to get mild flu symtoms and a headache. I was very tired and achy. After three weeks I found out that they are using some heavy duty mold cleaners and also spraying store bought ant and roach sprays in the office. It is tightly closed with no open windows so the chemicals are staying in the building. I am feeling sicker every day and think I will have to leave the job. Does anyone know if there is any legal recourse for a situation like this? Also, why doesn't anyone else in the office seem to be effected. He has back spasms and has difficulty walking normally and lifting objects. He has spray painted cars in a body shop for 12 years. Could fumes from paint or other materials used cause this? Many people have come down with different cancers. When questioning managers know one wants to speak about the situation. Well when one women died her father decided to take action. He is holding his own investigation. The grounds were check and so was the air quality. Both showed high levels of benzene, xylenes, toluene but they say it wasn't high enough to cause illness. Now there has been another death this one very unexpected of my mothers best friend who also works in this building. Unfortunately my mother still works in this building. We have since then hired a company to do testing (culture and air samples). The culture results came back as trichoderma, mucor and yeast. The air levels do not seem to be a high enough concentration to be causing the health issues. I had all kinds of problems everything hurt. Every month I'd begin to get better then I'd suddenly become worse than ever. I was dying. I had blurry vision and dropped things. Each month when I'd suddenly become so sick, I called the office to find that they used pesticides around the property and forgot to warn me as I had asked them to. I tried leaving for the days they treated the property but it did no good, I just kept getting sicker and the pest companies and all resources were of no help and often the opposite, denying that it's possible that I'm sick from the pesticides. They do this every month at every apartment complex throughout Maricopa county. If you live next to other complexes your get more exposures. Finally, I moved into a house. Within 3 days the fibromyalgia and sores cleared up. I found that I had to wash all my clothing several times in hot water to decontaminate them to prevent rashes and if I ate any food from the apt. I'd get very sick. I had to throw all away everything that I couldn't decontaminate. I have an extensive detox therapy program that is making it possible for me to feel alive and enjoy life. He beat on the door my friend answered it. The guy just passed by him saying bug man and was already spraying as he entered the door. He did not ask if he could or ask us anything. This was on a Friday morning and we had the room rented for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We left the room at once and went to the office. After we left the motel office we went to eat. As I sat there I developed a head-ache - became dizzy, and started throwing up. A waitress told my friend how to get me to the nearest ER. I was still throwing up (at the ER). I received oxygen breathing treatments shots for the throwing up spent most of the day there. Since then it has been 2 years of straight sickness and doctors who say it can be the cause but will not pinpoint it or put it in writing. While in port in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a large container of diethyl-benzene developed a high pressure leak and sprayed the chemical all over me (leaking from a safety valve). I walked to get away from the spill, feeling dizzy and nauseous, eventually fainting. Within a half hour an ambulance came to take me to the hospital. I could not go back to work and eventually had to go to New York for further testing. They found out I had liver damage from the exposure and was diagnosed with "chemical hepatitis." Though many of our medical problems subsided after moving, my partner continues to suffer extreme physical reactions when exposed to any amount of diesel exhaust. Her reactions are immediate and severe and include, vomiting, swollen glands, burning throat, an inability to swallow, fevers, shortness of breath and body soreness. She also has chemical sweats and is sometimes delirious during her fevers, which spike and break quickly. I called the chemical co. and they said to have my doctor fax them and they would release this to him. Well, after that day my doctor suggested I get a mmpi test. This is a test that shows basically - if you have a mental problem. I live in s.c. a no-fault state, which means, as my lawyer put it, my employer can shoot a gun in workers crowd, lets say it killed me, my family would have to prove the bullet was meant for me, then my employer would argue that the bullet was not big enough to kill me. I now have trouble doing simple things in life, when i go to fill up with gas, have to be careful and not smell fumes, they account this to post traumatic stress syndrome. Knowing how bad i feel, thought if I had a endoscopy done, they could find the chemicals in my stomach lining. He found that my lining was "irritated", said he could not look for chemicals for they change going through body. He did a soft tissue and found h. pylori, this is a bacteria that lives in the stomach. He said everyone has this, some people it does not bother, some people it does. He put me on 14 days therapy of 8 pills a day, not sure if this will help my nausea, well, they make me sick. When I take them (with food) I have to lay down all day. He also has Hepatitis 'C' of which his employer was aware and so the fact that he used any chemicals at all was against UK Health and Safety regulations. The psychologist I am referring to wrote in a report that I should be in an institution. I filed a complaint with the State Psychology Board, whose response was that she could write whatever she wanted to. I responded, even when her writings have a direct negative impact on pending litigation? No answer yet on that one. I had a been diagnosed with MCS prior to starting there, but my symptoms were mainly headaches. I thought I would be safe in a candy plant. I started work on 4/1/97 and within two months I began to experience headaches, weakness, tremors, in-coordination, memory problems, leg pains, shortness of breath and leg spasms. By the fall of 1998 I was so ill that I was forced to take a medical leave in order to control my symptoms with medications. I was also receiving monthly injections of sodium morrhuate in my head and neck to control my headaches. I had asked for the accommodations and that no chemicals be used in my office and notification if pesticides were sprayed anywhere in the plant. However, they sprayed pesticides in my office, and turned off the alarms to the anhydrous ammonia and allowed it to inundate the plant when the cooling pipes broke. Anhydrous ammonia was used to cool the plant. I also fought for an alarm system for the Methyl bromide chamber (used to fumigate the nuts.) This was not installed until after my termination. Many employees c/o feeling sick when working around the fumigation chamber. On the night of 12/7/98, my office floor had been stripped and the door closed, therefore my office was without proper ventilation. The fumes were allowed to accumulate. Early that morning I went to work and the odor of floor stripper was so strong that upon opening my office door I almost passed out cold. I had an excruciating pain in my head that made my head feel that it was about to explode. I asked to see the company physician about 20 minutes later and was told, “to wait and see if my headache would get better.” I had had enough experience with my headaches to know it would not “get better” with a little time, but still I waited for over an hour to see the company physician. I was given a shot for the H/A and told to not go back into that office. This news wasn’t taken well by my employer and I was asked if I could wear and work with a dust mask. I said, “no.” Not only were the fumes still so overpowering (by this time a floor fan had been put in there) but I also did not feel I would be safe working under the influence of a narcotic. The HR Mgr. then informed me that I could leave, but before I could do so I would have to go back into my office and get some files for her! She had just been informed that I was not to go back into that office. When I returned to work the next morning, I still had the headache, but I also was beginning to experience all of the symptoms that I had in August 1998; loss of balance, severe tremors in my right arm, numbness in my extremities and nausea. My employer was well aware of my symptoms and I was notified mid-week by my employer that, “well, let’s just see what Corp. wants to do with you.” I knew when she made that comment that my job was in jeopardy. I had witnessed employees being fired after filing a Workers’ Compensation claim. I had a complete list of all of the known chemicals in the plant, but when I looked at the MSDS, there was no mention of n-Hexane, 2-methylpentane or 3-methylpentane. I later discovered that n-Hexane and the methyl pentanes were disguised as petroleum distillates. Upon looking at the MSDS again, I found so many chemicals with “petroleum distillates” in them that I lost count. I live in a rural community with a population of less 100. My nearest neighbor is 3 blocks away and I use no pesticides in or around my home. Not until I spent quality time with an Environmental Physician did I really understand the depth of what had been done to me.I have heard from every Neurologist that I have seen that there is no evidence of MCS, yet the Social Security Administration recognizes it as a disability. Even in the state of Missouri, the corp. hq. of my ex-employer, the state has designated May 12th as FMS, CFS, MCS and GWS Awareness Day. Yet, here I am, still fighting the insurance carrier 3 ˝ years later for medical treatment for a recognized disease that was caused by my employment. They have been ordered to provide me with tx, but every time I begin treatment, the insurance company files another appeal…delay, deny and stall. I have been diagnosed with the following: headaches, toxic encephalopathy, toxic effects of petrochemicals and solvents, chemical sensitivity, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, vasculitis, tissue hypoxia and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. I have been told that I will require oxygen for the rest of my life as well as daily sauna to help prevent the build up of toxins in my system. I will also require a permanent intravenous catheter, for at least a year to give myself the IV therapy that I need. I finally figured out that when I took a few days off from driving the car I got well, and when I resumed using the car I got sick again. That was my first experience with "Volatile Organic Compounds" and the sickness they cause. I've had the same problem with other cars and currently drive an eleven year old car. I plan to keep it running as long as I can. I don't know what I'll do after that. According to the Wall Street Journal, the car manufacturers are considering a switch to molded plastics that do not "outgas," as engineers call it. It took me several years and several cars to figure out what it was in the car interiors that made me sick. I didn't know if it was the carpets, the upholstery, the molded plastic in the dash, or what. I eventually narrowed it down to the molded plastic (although things like Scotchguard on the carpets could be a factor.) Since my first experience with outgassing of volatile organic compounds from molded plastic, this type of plastic has become almost universal in cars and consumer electronic products like televisions, computers and radios. My 17-year-old TV was blown out by lightening a couple of weeks ago and I am desperately searching for a new TV that doesn't outgas. My last attempt to buy a new TV, about five years ago, was unsuccessful. Ditto my attempt to buy a new computer. My computer is a 1995. If anyone knows of cars, TVs, and computers that don't outgas I would be grateful for the information as I have to replace all three now or soon. The symptoms of exposure are gradual. I have to be in a car for several hours before I start showing symptoms. However, once I have a long exposure, I remain sick for a couple of days. Using the car again once I'm sick, and without taking a day or two off, makes me even sicker so that gradually the illness becomes worse and worse. In the case of a TV or computer I have to use it a couple of days before symptoms are clear. When I tried to buy a new TV a few years ago, it didn't occur to me there would be a problem with it. I started getting sick and I still didn't connect it with the TV at first. When I finally did, and stopped using the TV, I got well. Symptoms are dizziness, disorientation, and memory loss, followed by headaches that become more and more severe the longer I am exposed. After a couple of days, I feel lobotomized. I can't remember the names of good friends and have such a headache, fatigue and disorientation I feel lucky I didn't have a car accident in this state. Pure toluene was used in the sampling process, and the make-shift "lab" where I ran the tests was not adequately ventilated. There was an uncovered sink (with no overhead exhaust fan) that always contained a mixture of solvent, crude oil, and toluene. Toluene was also present in an overhead container with a spigot, and in a 55 gallon drum outside the "lab." In 1989, my employer stopped using toluene and built a properly ventilated lab. I was under the impression that toluene was a carcinogen. I didn't find out until years later that the chemical was actually a neurotoxin. By the time I learned this, I had long since been terminated from my job for exhibiting the exact symptoms that long-term exposure to toluene is now know to cause. Loss of memory, difficulty in concentrating or following instructions, personality disorders, anxiety, depression, and diminished cognitive abilities that resulted from toluene exposure were the main factors that cost me my career from the same employer that put me in the toluene-rich environment in the first place. When I was terminated, I attributed my mental impairments to job stress. A couple of years later, I was diagnosed as having a toxic injury to the brain. Most people, including doctors, think such symptoms are purely psychosomatic, or "all in your head." You won’t find this illness described in textbooks--yet-- but there are a number of articles, and even a journal dedicated to it. There is also a specialty, environmental medicine, that focuses on adverse reactions to chemicals and foods, as well as other allergies. This condition is usually called multiple chemical sensitivity, or MCS. "Sick Building Syndrome" is a variant of it. My patient probably had a fairly severe case of MCS, but over several decades had learned to cope, and therefore managed fairly well. What are the symptoms of MCS? They include weakness, headaches, nausea, confusion, irritability, generalized pain and shortness of breath, among others. My patient has a son who is bedridden due to chronic fatigue syndrome and multiple chemical sensitivity. Although this is a serious medical problem for the family, it has furthermore isolated them socially. Guests cannot enter their home, because the perfume they might wear (or even the soap or deodorant they used) could make the residents extremely ill. Not only that: if the guest had eaten potatoes recently, tiny amounts of the pesticides sprayed on the potatoes would be excreted in the breath or sweat and could cause worsening weakness. (It does sound crazy, but it isn’t.) A few years ago, I was entirely clueless about this illness. I did not know it existed, and if a patient had told me the above story, I’d have assumed they had a psychiatric, not medical, diagnosis. Even after I became involved in the issues of Gulf War Syndrome (in which an estimated 1/3 of affected veterans have developed MCS) and anthrax vaccine-induced illnesses, of which MCS is one, I still thought the condition was rare in civilians. After all, I’d practiced medicine for many years and had never seen a civilian case. The joke turned out to be on me. I’d seen lots of cases...but the patients had learned to keep very quiet about their symptoms unless they knew they were in the presence of a sympathetic ear. Once I started asking whether they had such symptoms, the flood of positive responses astonished me. Several surveys have asked people if they are unusually sensitive to chemicals, and up to one in six say "yes." Several percent of the population have been told by a physician that they have environmental sensitivity/environmental illness/chemical allergy/sick building syndrome or MCS. These are different names for the same thing. Three percent of the population is said to have fibromyalgia, another illness that many non-sufferers think doesn’t exist. Half my fibromyalgia patients have multiple chemical sensitivity. Fortunately, most cases are mild, and patients know what to avoid, or they get away from the triggering odor when symptoms develop. Sometimes they cannot do so, or are not aware that something in their environment is making them sick. The lucky ones manage to keep their home, and job, and stay functioning. The unlucky ones worsen. It’s not easy to qualify for unemployment because you are allergic to the workplace! No one yet understands the cause of this chemical sensitivity. It is clearly unlike standard allergic reactions. A whole new medical paradigm is needed to account for these unusual responses. However, since acknowledging the very existence of this illness threatens industry, there is almost no funding for research. A federal interagency report on MCS was stalled several years ago, while in the draft phase, and never was completed. It would have provided an official acknowledgement of the illness, and helped those suffering to obtain insurance and unemployment benefits. Before the Germ Theory, no one understood the cause of infectious diseases. Although their cause was unknown, their existence was not denied. Yet in our current scientific milieu, modern man thinks he understands all of nature. Therefore, that which is not understood, cannot exist. This is simply hubris. So very much remains unknown. We might even enjoy our world more, were we to acknowledge its mysteries. There are other conditions that remain unnamed and unappreciated within the standard medical model. MCS is especially important because as humans are exposed to more and more chemicals, the numbers of those made ill by them are increasing. Hopefully we will escape the fate of the Romans, whose burgeoning technology caused lead poisoning, which contributed to the culture’s demise. To do so, however, requires commitment and vigilance. Shortly after starting I was informed that we were going to be using a chemical herbicide to control unwanted vegetation in field areas that are stocked with game for hunting. I was given a two to three minute period of instruction in the "safe" use of the material, which essentially was to be sure to wash prior to eating, and no other restrictions. We were using old Fantastik spray bottles as applicators for the material, and the issue of protective clothing etc. was never addressed. At the time I was totally unfamiliar with the chemical names as listed on the MSDS. Again the Division Safety Officer assured me that this was similar to what you might use around your own home. Sadly nothing could have been further from the truth. The primary ingredients were 2,4-D and Picloram with a number of "inert ingredients". This formulation as I have since come to realize was used in Viet Nam under the code name Agent White or Tourdon101. After using this material for approximately one year I became aware of the actual regulations regarding this materials use in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This material is a restricted use product that requires commercial applicators license to use and the facility possessing the material was also required to be licensed to posses a restricted use product. Neither of these requirements was met. As a result of the use I now suffer a variety of medical problems including a cardiac abnormality, right-sided paralysis of the whole body, various visual problems, skin eruptions with skin loss to the hands and feet, gastrointestinal problems, a vocal chord lesion, and sinus problems. In a ten year period from approximately 1990 to present this material was used by four other employees who also developed multiple heath effects. At this point I am fighting the state for compensation, but this has been extremely slow in coming if in fact it ever will and as a result I not only have to deal with the physical loss but also am facing financial ruin as a result of the underhanded tactics of this state. Ever since I started working for this company I have been experiencing frequent headaches, muscular/joint pain, sinus infections, colds, cough and fatigue. Our youngest daughter was affected the most with stomach-aches and a sudden ear infection with none of the usual prior symptoms of a cold or congestion. My husband and I experienced headaches and a overall felling a lethargy. Fortunately my husband remembered a report he had seen on television that discussed the use of Formaldehyde in the gluing process or solution used in making this type of furniture. After talking with different salespeople while trying to locate an all wood desk, we were informed that we were not the first to complain of this problem. We called the company that made the desk and they offered to refund our money if we would donate the desk to a charity and send them a receipt showing that we had in fact, donated the desk. I am already suffering from a moderate degree of C.I. (Chemical Injury), so I had emphasized the importance on not using pesticides or herbicides. Now and then I had experienced times when I was affected by poisons, but I thought it was from adjoining lots. The other day, though dead bugs were all over in front of my door, and the smell of poison was very strong. I had a confrontation with the landlady, and she insisted that she though it was okay to use herbicides and pesticides as long as I wasn't home. I'll admit that I had a fit about it. Anyway, she showed me the can of "Hot Shot" which was recommended for use around food. Well, it proved very difficult to wash way, and it took about 50 washdowns and ten days to clear out. I've been looking for a job for awhile after being laid off. I was feeling so poorly for ten days that I couldn't go to interviews. The landlady told me she couldn't see that I was any different than usual, implying that I really had no problem. So many people seem to think that pesticides are as innocuous as lemonade. To make a l o n g story short, three years of blood tests, MRI's, CT's, ultrasounds, exams, and more exams, docs have found no "real" disease. Now, legally blind in the left eye and right eye being affected also, no one knows what is causing it, let alone how to stop it. Diagnosis: Retinal hemmorages, scleritis, chorio-retinitis, optic-neuritis,neuro-retinitis,papillitis, and out of fourteen different doctors no one can find the cause. Going back about 10-15 years, our neighborhood was infested with fleas. Spraying the yard with insecticide was a must otherwise we could not walk out into our yard. I would spray three or four times a week - this was not unusual and we still didn't get rid of our infestation. This has gone on for years. The doctors say that pecticide contamination could not be the cause because symptoms occur immediately after contamination. There is no other possible cause. When heated, it gives off fluorine gases. The study says the effect of this is not yet known. Certainly, however, it is another of the toxins we are loading up on in our toxic lifestyle. The study goes on to say that the most damaging effect of the use of teflon is the long-term concentration of its elements that collects in the environment. All the products that teflon is used in eventually break down, and these chemicals are found in rainwater, the air, and in then spread to all the environment. After chemical treatment the lumber would be taken out of the tanks and set to drip dry in an enclosed area. Traveling through this area all day with a fork lift raised the dust of the dried drippings from the lumber. I breathed this dust for years. One incident exposed my body directly to the chemical when a engineer open a valve that was under pressure as I stood there to assist. As the valve was opened I was sprayed and soaked from the waist down with the chemical. I returned home to shower. My skin was yellow for days. It has been about 12 years since my employment at the plant. I am concerned about the possibilities of any health problems resulting from this exposure. The first and worst was probably the Agricultural Chemicals application job in the late 1970s, where Treflan and Avadex were used. We poured the big pails of chemicals into the sprayer by hand, wearing no protective clothing or breathing gear. I was often splashed by the stuff, some got in my eyes and mouth, mostly on my skin. Then I worked in construction, where the PL 400 adhesives, insulation, and chipboard [glue intensive] were used [we cut the board, and that sent the material into our faces, made dust and fumes]. I worked in an insulation manufacturing plant [Johns=Mannville, Innisfail, Alberta] where the insulation fibers were floating thru the air constantly; sometimes we wore a basic dust mask, not always. My eyes became so badly sore and red that I had to quit - the boss/manager got mad at me and said it happened to nobody else, that I was wimp. I worked in oil refineries, and at wellsites where there was sour gas and condensate present [Shell Caroline had some wells that were 40%-90% sour!!]thats H2SO4] I started having odd pains and thinking was foggy by 1980. Eventually these pains [widespread and just as bad "at rest" as when I was active] became chronic, and severe. The Docs could not explain it, x-rays and blood tests were normal, but that was just basic blood tests, not looking for toxins. In 1990 I was finally diagnosed with "Fibromyalgia", but the Docs said it was a "psycho-social" disease!!! I know now its a neurological thing. My brain has become re-wired, and I became disabled. I have not been able to be on my feet, or do much at all since 1993. I don't sleep more than a couple hours and pains wake me up. My leg muscles twitch [fasiculations]...I get recurring headaches and my teeth hurt without cavities or anything a dentist can explain [trigeminal nerve]. I hurt all over. My hands are hurting now from typing so I got to quit. I was poisoned, I'm sure.
